NHL Headlines

Sidney Crosby, while in California seeing a spine and nerve specialist, found out that he had a neck injury in addition to his concussion. Sidney's rep proceeded to add that the neck injury was fully healed. The Pittsburgh Penguins are taking this as good news, as I would too. This neck injury will explain some of the pains they had before contributed to his concussion. Crosby was out on the ice before his team practiced earlier today. The last time he participated in a full practice was December 7th.

The Carolina Hurricanes ended trade rumors about their Alternate Captain, Tim Gleason yesterday by signing him to a new four-year, 16 million dollar contract extension. The Canes now have three players that are in the trade conversation. Joni Pitkanen, now hurt, is a good solid defenseman that can play an average of twenty-three minutes in a game. Tuomo Ruutu is a good finishing; gritty center that also has a great personality in the locker room. Bryan Allen the Canes biggest defenseman is also in the trade conversation with his contract ending at the end of this season. With the trade deadline coming up at the end of February most teams should expect a change.

Slapshot of the Day

Gordie Howe has appeared in the most NHL All-Star games. He has played in a total of twenty-three of them in his career.

Predictions for the 2012 Fantasy Draft

For the 2012 All-Star Fantasy Draft who is picked first really has to do with who wins the coin toss. In my opinion if Zdeno Chara gets to pick first he will choose the goalie from his team, Tim Thomas. If Daniel Alfredsson gets to pick first I think he will choose one of three people. I believe that he will chose Steven Stamkos, leading league in all scoring, Evgeni Malkin, leading league in points, or Erik Karlsson. Erik Karlsson is an amazing defensemen but being on one of the captain’s team does help. MY two beats for going last are either Jason Pominville or Jamie Benn. Now if I got to be a captain in the All Star game I would choose James Neal, Pavel Datsyuk, or Evgeni Malkin. All of those guys can put up numbers in assist's and goals and that’s what the All-Star game is all about with final scores of around ten to eleven.

NHL Top Headlines

Kris Letang a star defenseman for the Pittsburgh Penguins will be returning to action in tonight’s game against the New York Rangers. Letang has been out for twenty-on games with a concussion. The Rangers are currently tied for first place in the league with the Chicago Blackhawks, both with sixty-two points this season. This game is very different for both teams the Rangers want to get two more points to clinch the first place spot alone and the Penguins want to just stay in a playoff position.

The trading deadline for this season is approaching. Many General Managers have said to the media that their phones have been ringing with offers. Not many have been too pleased considering only two trades have been made since the Holiday Season ended. The Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadians orchestrated a swap sending right winger Rene Bourque to the Capitals and center Mike Cammalleri to the Flames. The Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers constructed a trade involving four inexperienced,(on the NHL level) players. The Hurricanes gave up Jon Matsumuto and Mattias Lindstrom in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov and A.J. Jenks.

The Edmonton Oilers, currently in twenty-ninth place, aren’t getting any help from the Hockey Gods. The Oilers young top line consisting of Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are all out because of injuries. The center of this line Ryan is out with a shoulder injury. The wings in this line, Jordan and Taylor, are out with a knee injury, (Jordan) and Taylor is out because of a cut to the face from a teammates skate during warm-ups before a game. Jordan and Ryan are the team’s top scores. The team is struggling without them and has lost four of their last five games.
