January 6, 2012

Only five games were played last night in National Hockey League. Florida played New Jersey, The Rangers played the Penguins, the Colorado Avalanche played the Chicago Blackhawks, Buffalo played Carolina and the New York Islanders played the Anaheim Ducks. The New Jersey Devils blew out the struggling Florida Panthers in a five to two Jersey victory. Two top teams in the league, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers played in a hard fought battle by both teams. New York came out on top of a three, one victory. The Carolina Hurricanes won against the Buffalo Sabers in what felt like a war between two teams, with the end score being two, four. Colorado played the excelling Blackhawks and ended up getting a shutout win against them. The Avalanche topped their fourth win in a row with a shutout by Semyon Varlamov. The Islanders and Anaheim, two teams in the bottom of the league, played last night. The Ducks beat the Islanders in a four, two victory. Troy Brouwer, Brent Seabrook, Andrew Ladd, and Colin Fraser all played together in a summer hockey team when they were ten. They all played together again in Chicago and won the Stanley Cup together.

Last night the Jets played the Canadians, the Boston Bruins played the New Jersey Devils, San Jose played Anaheim, and the Minnesota Wild played Vancouver, for a total of four games. The Montreal Canadians blew out the Jets, in a seven to three victory. The Bruins also played a blowout game against the Devils and captured a six to one victory. Roberto Luongo snagged his second shutout for the year in a three; zero Canuck victory over the Wild. The last game of the night was a Sharks victory over the Ducks, in a three, one game.

January 3, 2012

Six games went on in the NHL last night. The Edmonton Oilers played the Buffalo Sabers, the Lightning played the Maple Leafs, the Flames played the Capitals, the New York Islanders played Carolina, the Coyotes played the Blues, and the Detroit Red Wings played the Dallas Stars. The Oilers and the Sabers game ended in a four, three score with the Sabers out on top. Tampa Bay and Toronto ended in a high scoring seven to three score. The Maple Leafs won with each one of their goals scored by a different player. The Washington Capitals and the Calgary Flames score ended with the Capitals up on top of a three to one score. The score of the Canes and the Islanders game was tied three, three at the end of sixty minutes and went into overtime and went scoreless. The game went into a shootout and the Islanders ended up winning. After sixty minutes the game between the Blues and the Coyotes, the Blues had more goals then the Coyotes in a four to one victory. The Red Wings and the Stars game was close and ended in a five, four score with the Red Wings on top.


Slapshot of the Day

The reason the Hurricanes mascot is a hog is because when the Hurricanes organization first started the owner wanted to name the team the Ice Hogs. The rest of the organization didn't think that that would be "sellable" so they named the team the Carolina Hurricanes, but kept the mascot as a hog.

Besides the Winter Classic there were four games going on in the NHL. New Jersey played Ottawa, the Sharks played the Canucks, the Edmonton Oilers played the Chicago Blackhawks, and Colorado played the Kings. Three out of the four games went into either overtime or a shootout. The Devils and the Senators ended up with a tie of two after sixty minutes, but Daniel Alfredsson scored in overtime and won the game for the Senators. The Sharks and Canucks settled their game in a shootout. San Jose came out on top with a three, two victory. In the Avalanche, Kings game the score was tied one, one after sixty minutes. The Avalanche beat the Kings in a shootout. The only game that did not go into extra time was the Oilers, Blackhawks game; the score ended four, three, with the Oilers beating the number one team in the league, (in sixty minutes).

Winter Classic

January 2, 2012 the Rangers and the Flyers took the game of hockey outside for the 2012 Winter Calssic. The game was promised to be a good one. The New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers are division rivals, and fighting for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. The game was held in the Philadelphia Phillies baseball stadium. The first period started and ended in a zero, zero tie. In the second period, within two minutes of each other, Brayden Schenn, Claude Giroux, and Mike Rupp scored to change the zeroes on the board. Going into the third period the score was 2-1, favoring the Flyers. Two minutes into the final period Mike Rupp scored his second of the game to tie the score at two. Brad Richards scored three minutes later to put the rangers up 3-2. The rest of the period was scoreless, even though there was a penalty shot given to the Flyers with twenty seconds left. The Rangers won, beating their division rivals while climbing to the top of the Atlantic Division.

January 1, 2012

On the first night of 2012 there was only one hockey game on. It was between the Calgary Flames and the Nashville Predators. In the first period Jarome Iginla, Kevin Klein, and Sergei Kostitsyn scored to put the Preds up two to one after twenty minutes. In the second period Matt Halichuk, and Sergei Kostitsyn scored to farther Nashville's lead to four to one. In the final period Rene Bourque, and Brendan Morrison scored to make the score four to three, Preds. With thirty seconds left in the game Kevin Klein shot the puck down to the Flames empty net, but just before the puck went in the net Sergei Kostitsyn tapped it in and netted his third goal of the night, giving him a hatrick. The game ended five to three favoring the Nashville Predators.

Bobrovsky or Bryzgalov

Earlier today Ilya Bryzgalov announced to the media that he would not be starting in the Winter Classic game on January 2, 2012.
