Slapshot of the Day

Most people know what a hat trick is, (scoring three goals in one game). But did you know that in hockey there is such a thing as a Gordie Howe hat trick. A Gordie Howe hat trick is when one player in one game has a goal, a fight, and an assist.

January 13, 2012

Last night five games were played in the NHL. The Lightning played the Capitals, Phoenix played Columbus, the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Buffalo Sabers, Pittsburgh played Florida, and the Ducks played the Oilers. The Tampa, Washington game was a close one, and ended with the Capitals capping the Lightning in a three to two win. The Coyotes, Blue Jackets game was another close one that was decided by one goal. The Blue Jackets beat the Coyotes in a four to three win. The struggling Penguins defeated the Panthers in a four to one victory. Anaheim creamed Edmonton in a five, zero win. Jonas Hiller led the Ducks to the win getting a shutout.

Out of thirty teams only four of them played last night. The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals played, and New Jersey played Edmonton. The Pittsburgh Penguins, still without their star player and captain, Sidney Crosby, fell to Washington by one goal. The game ended one, zero Caps. After sixty minutes in the Devils, Oilers game was tied one, one and went into overtime. Zach Parise scored on a power play goal in overtime to seal the win the Devils two, one victory.

January 9, 2012

Only two games were played on a very inactive Monday night. The Vancouver Canucks played the Florida Panthers and the Washington Capitals played the Los Angeles Kings. The Panthers, Canucks game was low scoring ended with the Panthers beating the Canucks two to one, with goals in the second period by Dmitry Kulikov and Marcel Goc. The Kings topped the Capitals with a significant lead. The game ended five to two, Los Angeles. The five goals were scored by: Kyle Clifford, Anze Kopitar, Jack Johnson, (celebrated by Tebowing) Jarret Stoll, and Justin Williams. Both of the Capitals goals were scored by Marcus Johansson.

Slapshot of the Day

In the 2002-2003 season of the NHL Brian Boucher of the Phoenix Coyotes recorded the second longest shutout streak ever. The longest lasted six games and was recorded in 1927 by Alec Connell. Brian Boucher’s shutout streak lasted five games.

January 8, 2012

Last night only three games were played in the National Hockey League. The Flyers played the Senators, the Detroit Red Wings played the Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus played Anaheim. With about two minutes to go in the Philly Senators game it was tied four a piece, and looked like it was going into overtime. With to last minute goals by Ottawa the game ended with the Sens topping the Flyers four to six in regulation. The Detroit, Chicago was promised to be a good one, because both teams were at the top spot in the Central Division. After sixty minutes the game was tied at two, and went into overtime. With about two minutes left in overtime Pavel Datsyuk scored to end the game with the Wings beating the Hawks three to two. The Ducks blew out the Blue Jackets in a seven to four victory. Today the Columbus Blue Jackets fired their head coach Arniel and hired Todd Richards to take over. The Blue Jackets are currently seated in last place in the NHL.
